What's it like?Being a student at university is very different from going to school. Many students will have moved away from home for the first time and so there's no one telling you what to do, what to eat or when to go to bed.
Choosing to study something you like doing is always a bonus. It not only means that you are interested in the subject and will enjoy your classes and lectures, but you will also get to meet lots of people who are interested in the same things. Making friends is therefore easy.
But university isn't just about moving away from home and going to lectures. There are lots of other opportunities available to university students. Most universities have a Students' Union, which you can join. The Union at the University of Portsmouth has two night clubs, bars and shops and offers over one hundred clubs and societies for you to join. Going to university that make it a truly wonderful experience that many people never forget (even when they are old and wrinkly). But don't just take our word for it...
"There is no favourite thing; the whole experience has been great. I have made lots of good friends, some of which I will keep for life!"
Vinesh Pomal, 19, student at the University of Portsmouth.
"I like everything about being a student! But mainly being independent, as well as having the opportunity to try new things (such as joining a society or a club i.e. basketball), broadening my horizons and meeting people from different places."
Adeola Adereni, 19, student at the University of Portsmouth.
"There's a good atmosphere surrounding the University as you're constantly meeting new people all the time, especially through sport teams and crazy nights out at the Union. It's nice to have your own place as you have to be independent, and from this, you learn a lot about yourself as an individual. Along with all this, there are NO parents!"
Dean Gayton, 22, student at the University of Portsmouth.
"The best thing about Portsmouth Uni? Simply being here. The variety of new and positive experiences I have had since I moved down here are too many to mention. I haven't regretted my choice."
Gordon Kidson, 22, student at the University of Portsmouth.
