What do Kuala Lumpur and Portsmouth have in common?

Spinnaker TowerThe two cities certainly don't share the same climate, but one thing they both have are towers - Kuala Lumpur has the famous Petronas Twin Towers, which are an amazing 452 metres tall. Whilst over in the UK, the Spinnaker Twoer in Portsmouth, although much smaller than the Petronas Twin Towers, stands an impressive 165 metres into the sky.

Both are very different in terms of design and in height and are in two countries at opposite sides of the world, but both of these construction projects would have involved a great deal of planning and the skills of very many talented people, such as civil engineers.

All construction projects of this kind are about working as a team and that's what the pupils who took part in our roadshow discovered.

Pupils had to work within teams and were tasked with constructing a tower. They were given a budget for materials, which they had to control and spend efficiently. Teams were also asked to talk to the roadshow presenters about why they have designed their tower in a certain way and most importantly how much it cost.

The winning team were the ones who built the tallest tower, which held the most weight and cost the least money. A tough challenge!
