What is UP for It?
UP for It is a free membership scheme run by the University of Portsmouth for 11 to 16 year olds. It aims to inform young people about Further and Higher Education in a fun and informative manner to increase awareness of a variety of course and career opportunities.
How long has it been going?
The scheme was launched in January 2002 and has seen over 12000 members join. Since its inception in 2002 the scheme has had much success. As well as growing support from the local Education Department, schools, careers advisers and community groups; official recognition was received in April 2003 when the scheme won a gold award in the Widening Participation category from the Higher Education Information Services Trust (HEIST).
Does UP for It 'sell' the University of Portsmouth?
The scheme is free to join and is funded by the University of Portsmouth and information is produced in a non-biased nature to ensure that members gain a good understanding of all the opportunities that are available to them.
How do young people join?
The UP for It team attend careers days, parents evenings and various other school events. We also give special UP for It presentations during school assemblies. Young people from anywhere across the UK can also join up via the website.
What do members get?
- Members are sent a magazine that features articles on courses and careers along with student and course profiles, questions and answers and Press Packer opportunities
- Free workshops run by the UP for It team at the University during the school holidays
- A membership card that can be used to receive various offers and discounts in retail outlets and attractions
What is It'sUP2u?
This guide book was first produced in 2006 predominantly as an aid to choosing GCSE options in year 9. However the information is useful to students between years 7 and 11. The guide details all GCSE options including vocational subjects and gives a brief description of what careers are possible through studying those subjects. Useful websites and contacts are also incorporated as is information about further and higher education. If you would like an updated copy of the It's UP2u guide then please contact us.
