Why did you choose to go to university?

I chose to go to university, not only to further my education but also to gain valuable life experiences and to meet new people on a familiar wavelength to myself.

How did you choose which university to attend?

I researched all the different types of courses in my chosen subject area and then chose the most appropriate according to my interests. I then had a look at the different universities themselves on open days and preview days and decided that Portsmouth was for me!

How did you decide which subject area to study?

Since choosing to study French at GCSE and A-Level I realised that this was the subject I wished to continue studying at university.

What does your course involve?

My course involves the study of the French Language, as well as the study of issues related to France, such as French history, power and politics and cultural identity. Also, as part of a four year course, my third year is spent in France.

What do you hope to do when you leave university?

I intend to teach French.

What are the best bits about university for you?

I love learning new things related to my course and meeting new people from all different backgrounds.

How did you find the transition from college to university? What help did you receive? If you moved away from home, how did you find it?

There was plenty of help on offer from all the university staff and students alike. Moving away from home was a fantastic experience where I learnt lots of new things like how to cook!

What advice would you give to UP for It members who are not sure whether they want to go to university?

Have a look at the courses that interest you and have a look at the relevant universities. Don’t feel daunted by the process – there is lots of help available if needed. Once you’re at uni, if you decide it’s not for you, it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of other options available.
