Why did you choose to go to university?

I have always wanted to go to university to experience life outside of London and to gain independence.

How did you choose which university to attend?

I chose the top six universities at the time which was best for my course and also not in London. When I went to the open days and interviewing I got a better idea of how the university and cities were like and picked the university I liked the most.

How did you decide which subject area to study?

I gained a great interest for sciences in year 11 and researched on particular jobs a science degree could offer. I read about a degree in pharmacy and liked the opportunities it could offer graduates. The salary was also appealing too!

What does your course involve?

Pharmacy is a very challenging and demanding course, but it is also very interesting a rewarding. It covers a wide range of topics form the core chemistry and law units to the drug delivery and pharmacology units. It also gives you a chance to have elements in both community and hospital pharmacies to give you an idea of the practical side of the course.

What do you hope to do when you leave university?

I hope to start my pre-registration placement in a well known community pharmacy and once the pre-registration is over become a relief pharmacist manager in that area. Hopefully after a few years experience as a pharmacy manager I will be able and competent enough to become an area manager.

What are the best bits about university for you?

The best bits about university would be the great friends you make, the experiences you gain and the in-depth knowledge you gain in your specialist subject.

How did you find the transition from college to university? What help did you receive? If you moved away from home, how did you find it?

I found the transition from home very easy. This may be because I made great friends in my halls and the resident assistants (second and third year students living in halls too) made university feel like home. Portsmouth as a city is also very student orientated which helps with the settling in process.

What advice would you give to UP for It members who are not sure whether they want to go to university?

University is a great place to learn more about yourself and meet people who you will probably be friends with for life. You will also get a chance to learn what you enjoy and are interested in. It also gives you the opportunity to achieve more in life. The best thing would be to pick a course you really enjoy now in school and research what degrees and jobs you could do in that area in the future.
