EngineeringEngineering is all about designing, making and improving things and solving problems. The areas that cover engineering are very widespread as engineers do all kinds of jobs. Some engineers are involved in design using the latest computing software; others are involved in making things.
Plan, design, construct and maintain: l transport systems, roads, railways, bridges, airports, water supplies, reservoirs, dams, pipelines, large buildings, shopping centres and football stadiums.
Change materials in a chemical and physical way. They often work in food processing, fuel refining, brewing, medicine and materials production.
Generate and supply power. They work in power stations and generating plants, but also develop new technology for more environmentally friendly energy sources.
Apply engineering to anything that involves the sea, e.g. racing yachts, cruise ships and submarines or the engines that power these vessels.
Design and make machines that use power. They develop anything including satellites, radios, TVs, mobile phones, computer games consoles, washing machines or medical equipment.
Design and make parts for machines that move. This could be anything from Formula One cars, to machines that make clothes or food. They work in areas such as medicine, aerospace, sport, automotive, railways etc.
